Tuco Salamanca is a violent and unpredictable figure introduced in the second episode of *Better Call Saul*'s first season, "Mijo." He is first seen preparing salsa in his home when his grandmother returns after a run-in with the Lindholm brothers. When Cal and Lars Lindholm follow her home and falsely claim serious injuries from a staged accident, demanding money, Tuco beats them unconscious with his grandmother's cane. He then arranges for Nacho Varga, No-Doze, and Gonzo to bring a van. When Jimmy McGill arrives searching for the twins, Tuco drags him inside at gunpoint, setting off a tense confrontation in the desert.

In "Mijo," Tuco takes Jimmy, Cal, and Lars to a remote location in the desert, where he and Nacho interrogate them. When Jimmy claims to be a lawyer, Tuco does not believe him and threatens to cut off a finger. Jimmy then falsely claims he is an FBI agent, but Nacho is suspicious and threatens him again, leading Jimmy to admit the truth: he is a lawyer who intended to scam the Kettlemans. Nacho convinces Tuco that killing a lawyer would attract unwanted attention, so Tuco frees Jimmy but moves to kill the twins. Jimmy talks Tuco into only breaking one leg each as punishment. The episode marks the first appearance of Nacho Varga, played by Michael Mando.
In Their Own Story
The episode "Mijo" shows Tuco's volatile nature from the start. After beating the Lindholm brothers unconscious, he drags Jimmy inside at gunpoint. In the desert, Tuco questions Jimmy, threatening to cut off a finger when he doesn't believe Jimmy is a lawyer. Jimmy's false claim of being an FBI agent is quickly undermined by Nacho's suspicion. Ultimately, Nacho convinces Tuco that killing a lawyer would bring unwanted attention, so Tuco spares Jimmy but intends to kill the twins. Jimmy negotiates Tuco down to breaking one leg each. Later, Nacho visits Jimmy's office, telling Jimmy he wants to steal the Kettlemans' $1.6 million of embezzled funds and offering a finder's fee. Jimmy insists he is a lawyer, not a criminal, but Nacho writes his phone number on a matchbook and tells Jimmy to call when he figures out he is "in the game."
